I have six nephews ages 27 to 38 and in the last 10 years, all of them married and most have had babies — there are 12 grandchildren among them now.

All of them pursued courtship in an old fashioned yet achingly wonderful way, no hook ups, no living together before marriage, just following God and pursuing their mates.

These men and their lovely, beautiful wives, my adopted nieces if you will, give me great hope for the future.

It is concerning and yes, we want our children and grandchildren to have normal relationships with the opposite sex. Crushes, first loves, true love….all the things that make humans human. LGBQT agenda has caused great harms, especially trans by not letting young teens be confused and learn to grow out of it. Transgender agenda has become a wrecking ball. We must instill good family values and faith based values to our society to overcome the harms being pushed upon children.

Thank you for this. I’ll add that I’m old fashioned and I don’t mind it. Premarital sex is not the paradise it’s cracked up to be. I hope that Ms Schrier is not bemoaning the decline in sleeping around.

Sleeping around hasn't declined, dating and relationships have, love amd romance have.

When you get people do have sex nowadays, it is more likely with a one-night partner than a loving boyfriend or girlfriend. And that is a cause for concern.

That’s true. I think I misunderstood your previous comment. But yes, ‘hooking up’ with very casual relationship or practically strangers is a cause for concern. Movies and tv practically glorify it.

Personally I’m glad if ‘sleeping around’ has declined, I just want teens to enjoy kissing and being happy with others.

Can't wait to read this. I wish it was coming sooner!

As someone who has had to spend too much of my adult life alone, I can safely say there is nothing worse and nothing- health, finances, accommodation, work and more- that is not made several times worse by being alone. Loving one person leads to more friends, family, community.

Pairing up and getting married is not only good for individuals but also for society. Married societies tend to be more affluent and better functioning.

I can't stand the nonsense that girls spout about having a boyfriend is 'cringe.'

And it beggars the question, if love and relating are not our focus, what is? Devoting ourselves to ourselves? To food? To consumerism?

Great photo too by the way!

Love from Ireland.

Abigail, you are such a treasure. My two college aged grandsons are 20 and 21 years old and seem to have fallen into the trend towards avoiding heterosexual relationships. By their age, I had fallen into and out of love a few times. I believe that I was better prepared for marriage although in retrospect, my first marriage was a mistake. Many thanks. I look forward to reading your new book.

This will be fascinating – I recently spoke on obstacles to family formation at the Foundation for the Future in London, based simply on my observations of working with young people, and having an ear to the ground. This promises to be a far more comprehensive analysis... but you are right, unless we can turn things around, hopes for the future of civilisation look grim! And while I'm here, thank you so much for 'Bad Therapy' – absolutely spot on and I say that as a therapist!

I'm ordering this one for my oldest daughter who just went to college 3000 miles away. (And does have a boyfriend now but we'll see how that goes.) And Abigail, you look beautiful. It's a great headshot.

So is there an actual concerted PLOT, or is it more a societal slide away from monogomy into hookup culture?

Harry Schiller's avatar

Where does the “hookup culture” narrative come from? If 20-somethings are engaging in hookup culture, it is a tiny minority of us.

I cant imagine that there is an organized plot of any kind to keep young people from pairing up. My guess is that "the plot" if you can call it one, is the same things we've identified for years now; media & tech companies fighting for attention & commoditizing everything they possibly can, creating a fundamental shift in the way people interact with each other. Younger people, having grown up with social media as the norm, have on average become less interested in things that may be viewed as "traditional" (traditional being good or bad as a whole separate issue).

I don't know if that's where the author is going with this, but that would be my guess.

"I cant imagine that there is an organized plot of any kind..."

Which is exactly what allows organized plots to persist.

They sound crazy, until you start connecting the dots. Is it coincidence, unintended consequence, or design?

Do your own research and you'll see that there is an intentional pattern of many "random" influences that all support the ZPG agenda.

Look up Gates and Soros and overpopulation.

Too many coincidences to be coincidences.
